A Note about Age

The "What to Do’s” on every behavior advice page are proven ways to teach a child of any age what you want him to do, instead of a behavior that you don't want him to do. Occasionally, we may use an example that refers to a child of a certain age (“when your 4-year-old girl…”); or talks about a certain situation (“when your little one is at daycare…”); or mentions particular activities (“color on your drawing table…” or "playing thoughtful games, such as chess…").

Keep in mind that all advice in each problem can teach a positive behavior to your child doing this behavior, regardless the age. And the first three steps in responding, not reacting, to a situation with your child are always the same, regardless of the age of your child: Self-Talk and Empathy are ways to mentally prepare yourself to stop, breathe, think and practice self-control, the beginning steps to mentally prepare yourself to Teach your child the new behavior you want.

I will avoid power struggles by keeping my tone of voice positive. My child and I are a team, working toward the same goal.

It's never too late.

I can always start teaching a child a new behavior.

It's not the end of the world if I make a discipline mistake.
